These are mood boards for the upcoming project. we have been assigned to make a wooden toy that is transportation themed. I have chosen to make a space shuttle, above are ideas of the shape and design for the toy, as well as the methods of using wood to create them.
Research was conducted on various types of wood that would be suitable for this project. Pine board is soft and easy to work with and is relatively cheap to acquire. A pine beam was also acquired to construct the body of the shuttle as well as the main fuel tank.
In terms of scale, it was go big or go home. The length of the completed toy is 650mm. The reason for such a large scale was to incorporate finer detail into the shuttle with ease. A lathe was used to construct the fuel tank, whilst the side boosters used 30mm sourced dowel sticks. The rest of the toy was made using sanding and carving.
The toy contains 4 parts: the main fuel tank, 2 side rocket boosters and the shuttle. The tail of the shuttle contains 2 moving fins that would be used to control the direction. It is meant to stand straight up but the toy can be disassembled in order to play with the parts separately.
