Introduction

A canvas of art. An evolution into a space for artistic expression during the 20th Century.  Record label cover designs from the 1970s –1990s have become iconic, creating a culture in music and beyond time, adding to consumer value and creating current visual culture, thus reflecting subversions of their time. Some of these are still present in our current visual culture. In the age of streaming music and digital albums being released there has been a revival in vinyl record collecting which brings the nostalgia back into play.

Research and Insights

Music can be described as sounds coming together to create something that influences society, culturally, emotionally and politically through behaviour, the atmosphere, feelings and expression. The music industry is a viable source to create the bond between artists of all genres and styles and the world population. To distribute music to people for entertainment, comfort and expression.

"A new sound of music"  - Cactus Jack

Creating a new musical style, fusion of traditional rap, hip hop, lo-fi and and ambient vibe, ultimately focuses on new expression of art. Cactus Jack a new record label that has become pronounced through, Travis Scott.  His mark under the name Cactus Jack launched in 2017. This album cover that is designed, is a Compilation album by JACKBOYS and Travis Scott.
JACKBOYS are a collective rap group,Travis Scott, Don Toliver, Luxury Tax 50, Shack Wes and Chase B, signed to Scott’s Cactus Jack Records. Using an existing record label cover layout, Sacred Bones Records, the cover will be comprise of the design elements of the compilation album and the layout of Sacred Bones Records.

Target Audience

The target market and/ or audience is viewers and listeners of ages 14 – 35. The Gen X generation that are consumed with relatable music and music that speaks about ongoing issues around the world.

Introducing the record label cover

The final concept comprises of mixed media. Collage media is used to create that foundation of the design and also to create that textured feel, by tearing up imagery and creating that texture. The second element is to hand render illustration/ drawings layered over the paper, digitally.​​​​​​​
