Felt Chair
The felt chair is the result of an investigation of the woolfiber and its incredible qualities and features. In this project I have been working with textile as my focal point. I wanted to challenge the way we use fabrics today by using alternative methods of working with textiles in furniture industry.
The project was a detailed study of the woolfibers ability to shrink through steaming and experiments with the felt showed the characteristics of shaping the felt in both convex and concave directions. For the project I have been based in the hatter's work process of felt for hats, and transformed this process to shape the felt over a simple frame. By adding molds to the frame I have the possibilities to work with a complex double curvature seating. When the felt is dry and stiffened I can easily remove the molds and leave the felt alone with the frame.
The felt chair is made of 100% woolfelt and the frame comes in ashwood.
