Photowalk: Analogue Streets

photowalk:
"Analogue Streets"
The idea for the photowalk came as we wanted to give our audience a hands-on experience, so they could feel by themselves what we want to say with our project - the philosophy of analogue photography of being more mindful of each moment captured on camera.

An experience which allow to take a deeper dive into film photography and feel closer to artists showcased in the project "8 Film Layers".
Photowalk was held on May 15th of the year 2021. It was instructed by Martin Murusalu: an architect by profession and a film photographer by passion. He mostly practises street photography which made him the perfect tutor for the photowalk that took place on the streets of Tallinn. Martin also owns an analogue camera rental place called Emulsioon.
Photowalk was co-instructed by Airi Leon. Airi is one of the founding members and the head of Eesti Tänavafotograafia MTÜ. Her mission is to introduce and promote the genre of street photography in Estonia. She also has a lot of previous experience in organizing photowalks and workshops in Estonia.

Thanks to Martin and his film camera rental company "Emulsioon", all the participants were provided with analogue cameras, which they could use to unlock the secrets of film.

You can get to know more about Martin and his works by checking out the mini-documentary series and visiting our exhibition "Analogue Soul"
at Uus Laine in 19 June.
Photowalk started with an introductory lesson about film photography, where participants learned all the technical aspects of the camera, like how to choose the ISO, aperture, shutter speed. They also learned about composing photos, fast framing and zone focus.

After the introduction cameras were loaded with film and were ready for shooting!
The walk took the participants through refreshing Telliskivi and Balti Jaam, captivating Old Town and ended in modern Rotermann Quarter, giving the participants an opportunity to experiment with different styles of street photography.
Feedback from participants:
“ The photowalk was a lot of fun! The instructor really pushed us from our comfort zone and hopefully the pictures will reflect that. Even the thunderstorm politely waited until we were indoors, so overall it was a super nice experience”.

“ I wanted to know more about film photography, so I decided to take part in the photowalk.
Martin introduced us to film photography, and he was a very good teacher. He calmly went through things with us and repeated the most important things several times.
When we went for the walk, he was always around, so we could ask for help from him. I feel I really got the hang of film photography. I also liked the structure of the photowalk, we walked in interesting places and got to take pictures of so many things”.

“A Few years ago I had the opportunity to take pictures with a film camera and ever since I’ve been missing it dearly but never committed to have that experience again.
I must say when I heard about this Photowalk where we are provided with film cameras and a brief introduction on how to use them - it felt like a dream come true.

The event was organized very smoothly. Our guide provided us with some cool film cameras, shared useful tips and his own experience on film photography. We even had different challenges like taking a portrait of a stranger etc. It was a lovely event and left me with great memories. Also, the guide allowed us to take the cameras home for a few weeks and fill some more film rolls. I’d definitely recommend this event to anyone who wants to try film camera photography and have that assurance that they are doing it correctly”
