Thoughts on Typography and Layout

This is a student project and assignment for the 2681QCA Typography and Print course, in which we would explore and experiment with type setting, and layout. We were asked to typeset a printed publication. The publication was to feature three essays, each denoting aspects of typography and layout. We have explored typographic layout and book design throughout the course, and this knowledge and research has been culminated and collated into the final project.

Typeface Selections

Selecting the typefaces for the assignment played a key part in developing the overall design of the project. We were tasked with choosing four typefaces, one body copy typeface and 3 heading/ display typefaces for each of the three essays. Emphasis was to be placed on legibility and readability, as well as creatively representing the text being set. My type face selections were as followed; Helvetica for my body copy text, Juniper for 'Crystal Goblet', Gopher for the essay 'Grid Systems' and Becker Gothics for 'Typography as Discourse'.
Process

Initial drafts for the publication pages. Sample spreads were created to examine a variety of page layout options, typographic grids and placements.
