As part of my Major Project at the University of South Wales I designed a set for a chosen sequence from the book Heroes and Villains by Angela Carter.
My set consisted of a large house of numerous architectural styles that was claimed by a nomadic tribe - referred to as 'Barbarians' in the book - following a nuclear apocalypse.
From the hall, a large staircase leads to the landing of a chapel. This chapel is the room of the tribe’s sacral leader who has fabricated a religion to control the 'Barbarians'. The main symbol of this religion is a snake, which appears at various places in my set. The snake is painted on the floor of the chapel, and painted or carved on many of the Christian religious symbols. The chapel is dark and mysterious, as the leader himself.
