Ludus cartarum

Ludus cartarum is an editorial project about history and printing processes of playing cards across centuries, from the very beginning to modern days.

The layout was designed in order to obtain a contemporary look with some "old fashioned" elements. This lead to the choice of creating a visual contrast in the pages, with heavy images near a big amount of negative space and a classical Bodoni typeface near a very modern Futura.

Some of the photos displayed in the book were taken from a unique exposition about playing cards and tarots that took place at the Museo Ettore Fico in Turin. Due to this most of the pictures are original card sheets and printing plates of their own time.

This project was realised for the lecture of Typographic Design of Politecnico di Milano.
