Luma

Product Aim
Luma is an educational childrens toy designed to give children an alternative to writing as an output to express themselves. Luma allows children to use their imagination to create scenes which are projected onto a wall. Children can then tell and act out stories through the projected scenes and by using cut-outs, helping them to develop storytelling and presenting skills at an early age.
Research
The research phase of the project started by looking at the area of dyslexia and how it effects children. This is a topic close to me as I have dyslexia and I felt from my experiences that more needs to be done in education to help those with dyslexia.
Conceptualisation
A variety of ideas were developed and evaluated using the findings from the research phase and the brief. This lead to the final concept based around creating scenes by using shadow casting.
Prototyping
Low-fidelity models were made initially to test the concept of shadow casting and understand areas that could be improved upon such as finding the ideal light source, the angle of projection and the best distance from the wall. The mid-fidelity prototype allowed for testing the projection screen. The final model accurately represented the desired aesthetic while allowing for further testing and user feedback.
Final Design
Luma has been designed so that it can be mass produced at a low cost. The projection screen magnetically attaches to the projection body. The body features a flat folding sheet design that utilises snap buttons and living hinges to form the desired shape. This reduces the packaging size lowering shipping costs and making storage easier.
User Testing
Mark aged 6 and David aged 8 tested Luma. This provided useful feedback on how to further improve the product with future iterations.
