Jon Divens's profile

Becoming a Film or Television Producer

Jon Aubrey Divens, a member of the Producers Guild of America, has been working as a producer in California for over 25 years. Having previously worked for Warner Bros. and Walt Disney Film, he produced two Blade movies. Jon A Divens serves as a producer for Rocket Media, Inc., and is responsible for developing scripts, hiring staff, and overseeing production of major films.

Being a producer is a hefty job. Producers start the process of getting a movie or television show made. They are responsible for overseeing the entire production process and work with other creators on the project, like writers and actors. These individuals are in charge of choosing directors for certain scripts, hiring actors and other crew members, raising money for the project, supervising branding and marketing, and monitoring project success once it’s released.

Since there are so many responsibilities tied to producers, these professionals need at least a bachelor’s degree in an area related to film or television production. This includes a bachelor’s in acting or journalism.

However, education only gets producers so far. While in school, interning is a great way of gaining first-hand experience with film and television production. Many local theaters or movie production companies offer internships that are perfect for aspiring producers.

Alongside this, working full-time in the film industry helps producers gain an understanding of what actors, writers, and other personnel need on set. It also keeps producers up-to-date on trends affecting the industry and changing audience interests.
