Introducing Savamala

Savamala (Serbian Cyrillic: Савамала)
The name comes from the name of the river
Sava and turkish word mahala (neighbourhood or block of houses).

Savamala is located south of the Kalemegdan fortress
and streches along the bank of the river Sava.

Savamala had lots of stores where tradespeople could start a business, but as soon as they got rich, they would move into more elite districts of Belgrade. Luka Celovic wanted to changed that. After he became rich he stayed in Savamala and decided to make this district a city center of Belgrade. He built many beautiful buildings in Savamala. Also, in the end of 19th century train station and a railway were built there.Because of that Belgrade market started working. Rich people started moving into Savamala and that was the begining of banking etc. Savamala became trade center of Serbia in that time.

Today, we could say, Savamala is art center of Serbia. Street art and urban platforms became a symbol of Savamala. Also, many big art and music festivals are placed there. Every year there's a Mikser festival that always brings new and innovative things from art world into this district. Mikser multidisciplinary platform also organizes events like design market, design food market etc.
And Oktobarski salon, one of the biggest art manifestation was placed in Savamala.

So, to complete my story about Savamala, you can watch my video down below and feel that poetic side of the district that we all adore here in Belgrade.
