De avond is ongemak //bookcover

For this assignment we had to make a book cover for a existing Dutch book, we could choose between 3 books, i chose 'De avond is ongemak'
I started with sketching every little thing i could think of on one big spread, because of this I noticed that i wanted to make a image that used some symbolism.
In the book someone drowns and the main character 'jas' feels very guilty, i wanted to showcase being unable to breath and i did this by opening her ribcage and drawing water. i also gave her a coat, since she always wears one to protect herself, but later in the book this is taken away from her, that's why the coat bearly clings to her.
The first colour i picked was blue, this was a obvious choice since i really wanted a cold vibe, and it symbolises the water. as a contrasting colour i chose a Yellow, since this is a happy colour and jas her coat is her protection. i also made her eyes yellow to symbolise innocence.
on the back of the book i wanted to showcase a room of the house where her coat is hanging, the room will have lots of puddles and cracks to showcase the water some more.
i made a quick collection of the sketches to give myself a idea of what it was going to look like.
here you can watch my sketching and colouring proces for the final images.
i wanted to keep the text quite simple since the cover and back are already quite busy, the title i wrote myself and i made sure to keep the letters thin and long. for the back of the book i used a easy to read font so it doesn't stand out too much.
i made sure to give the book a 3mm bleed and to add all the other print marks. I did this in Indesign.
The mockups i made using photoshop, these were made so my cover would be easy to visualise.
