The multiple PRO14 champions made a massive statement at the weekend by winning their Champions Cup quarterfinal against Exeter Chiefs with some degree of comfort. Why that is significant is because the Chiefs were the holders of the Cup and their early demise at the hands of the Irish province is a strong indication that Leinster could go into the Rainbow Cup as champions of Europe.
That of course is if the Rainbow Cup still happens, with all the indications being that because of overseas government concerns, particularly Ireland, around the Covid pandemic, the planned forerunner to South Africa’s participation in the PRO16 is hanging in the balance.
Although there were reports at the weekend that the competition had already been cancelled that is not at this point the case. While there have been no official statements, it is understood that the organisers are working around the clock behind the scenes to find a way for the competition to take place as scheduled.
This coming Friday was always the deadline for the planning for the tournament to be finalised and that has not changed. So while the South African teams may feel they are in a bit of a limbo situation this week, they should at least know quite soon exactly what they are preparing for.
As it stands, while obviously the process of applying for visas to travel to the United Kingdom and/or Ireland will be impacted by the uncertainty, there shouldn’t be too much of an impact on their preparation for the immediate challenge they face. Their Rainbow Cup campaigns were scheduled to start with three rounds of derby matches within South Africa and with the British and Irish Lions tour on the not too distant horizon, it is imperative that the local players go into action as scheduled.
All that could change is the title of the competition that the games form part of, with a franchise competition or even an early start to an extended Currie Cup season, thus also featuring the Cheetahs, Pumas, Griquas and Eastern Province, being mooted as a potential alternative should the Rainbow Cup not happen.
With the welfare of the players and the possible impact on the Springbok chances of beating the Lions in mind, what should be avoided is an extended competition just featuring the four top franchises. The intense rivalries between the franchises and the familiarity of the players with one another, the competition that gives rise to, means that derby games are already more physical and intensely fought that other matches the teams play.
Add the carrot of playing for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be part of a Lions series to the matches and the face off between players competing for places will become even more intense and physical. New Zealand found to their cost last year that an extended series of derby matches, such as happened in their internal Super Rugby competition, does take a heavy physical toll on the players. The Boks cannot afford that ahead of the Lions series.
The first prize is that the Rainbow Cup still goes ahead, and on that front the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup games played this past weekend did provide positive fuel for the marketers of the tournament.
Leinster led the way with their emphatic 34-22 win over the champions, and they way they just systematically squeezed the strong Chiefs side out of the game, doing the strangulation job that the best Bok teams have become renowned for, was mightily impressive. The Chiefs led 14-0 at one point of the game and it did not look good for them but that was when Leinster showed their championship qualities.
Their physicality in shutting out the Exeter attempts to come back at them later in the game, when Exeter did enjoy a lot of territory but were blanketed by the suffocating Leinster defenders every time they got the ball, was an indicator that the Irish team will pose a strong challenge to the South African sides.
Ulster, participating in the Challenge Cup, also made a strong statement about their potential to challenge in the Rainbow Cup when they produced a powerful display to beat Northampton away in their quarterfinal. Like Leinster in their game, Ulster were behind early but came back to win with with a degree of comfort in the end, the final score being 35-27.
The Italian team Benetton, who propped up the bottom of their conference log in the PRO14, also showed their potential to be more competitive than anticipated when they pushed the historically strong French club, Montpellier, all the way before going down 31-25 in their Challenge Cup quarterfinal.
It is also interesting to note when discussing the potential quality of the opposition the South African teams will face in the Rainbow Cup that while Leinster are still there, this past weekend’s games extinguished any English interest in the Champions Cup. Sale Sharks, heavily laden with quality South African players, were well beaten by French club, La Rochelle, 45-21, with capped Springboks Raymond Rhule and Dillyn Leyds excelling for the winners.
