William Bryan Farney's profile

Financing Conservation Through Exotic Species Hunting

The recipient of a JD from the University of Texas Law School, William Bryan Farney is an accomplished Georgetown-based patent attorney with more than 30 years of legal experience. Outside of his profession, William Bryan Farney raises exotic animals from different continents in the world, including Asia and Africa.

Decades after exotic animals from Asia and Africa were first brought to Texas, the state has roughly 5,000 ranches with exotics. About 1,000 offer commercial hunting. Many of these support conservation efforts through the hunts, including Ox Ranch in Uvalde.

At Ox Ranch, exotic species are priced based on their supply and demand. The ranch only allows the hunting of older animals (mostly males) that are no longer reproductive or posing a threat to breeding. Proceeds from the hunting finance care for the rest of the herd, including feeding and breeding, and the ranch donates 10 percent to a conservation group.
