This project sought to create an idea for revitalizing alleyways in Washington, DC. Focusing on an alleyway running through DC’s Shaw neighborhood, my project proposed an arts walk, a corridor of affordable housing and studio space for artists. I wanted to create activity in the alley through transparency between the alley and the ground-floor studio spaces, and connectivity between the alley and 14th Street’s established arts-related businesses and institutions. This plan sought to tie together the corridor with a unique paving material, and  create a plan for a typical city block as well as a plan for a prototypical affordable housing/studio unit.   —Arch 401, Fall 2008  Crit: Bill Jelen
