kaiju paper toy
----- the project -----
for this project I had to design a paper toy which would be sold at a store that I had to come up with. I had all freedom on what kind of paper toy I wanted to make.
----- the process -----
I really wanted to make a monster for my paper toy, and I was greatly inspired by Godzilla and the pacific rim movies where they have giant reptilian like creatures.

right from the moment I heard what this project was going to be about I kind of started to immediately work something out on paper. I eventually did not stick with this design nor did I really work it out that much, but I quickly knew it was going to be a bit too detailed and small for a paper toy for this project.
after I figured this first dummy was not going to work I started to finally sketch out some ideas I had. for these sketches I started with some much more simple, square shapes.
besides monsters I also drew two characters, which I tried out in different scenes.
I eventually made dummies of three of these sketches. I made a dummy of both the characters and a dummy of the middle monster.
although I really liked how the two characters turned out so far, I was really interested and curious to work out the kaiju more, since I felt that this one was going to be a bit more of a challenge and a more unique idea and design.
I am however still working on the two characters in my own time, because I really like them too much to not work them out properly.
once I had the shapes for my kaiju I already was really happy with it, but it felt it could need a little more details. so I added some spikes on its back and tail, to add that detail I felt was missing.
I do not have many progress pictures of the kaiju because I unfortunately forgot to make those. but these are some pictures of the final dummy. it does already have the first design for my store's logo and the placement of where I wanted to place the information, but it does not yet have the colour scheme I wanted to go with.
once I was happy with the design and everything, I worked out the fold-out for the toy digitally. during this process I often printed out what I had drawn so far to make sure all surfaces were the correct size so everything would fit together correctly, which I'm very glad I did because there were a few things I had to correct.
after I was sure everything was the correct size, I worked on the colours of the toy. I decided to put the information for my store on the side of the tail, so it is visible, but not too much.
for this project I also had to design a store in which our paper toy would be sold. since my paper toy is a monster like creature and I really enjoy stores where things are sold for geeks, I decided my store was going to be like that as well, where there will be different sections of content.
for the name of the store I went with 'Hidden Planet' and for the information I mainly used my own information since it was just the easiest choice for me.
I made a sketch for the logo and I actually was really happy with it, so I went with it for my final design
I choose for the name and the logo because they're both rather sci-fi which I am a huge fan of, and I thought they fit my store very well.
