Looking Glass Collages

I abhor waste, especially when it comes to art supplies, so instead of squandering the dried gouache left over on my palette from previous projects, I decided to rewet the paint and put it down on some newsprint. Once dried, I tore, cut up and rearranged the newsprint into my sketchbook to create interesting and unexpected color collisions. These collages made the ideal surfaces to practice drawing portraits with my tuscan red and scarlet Prismacolor Col-erase pencils. The end result transcends simple portrait studies and comes together to create a layered, textured series, where eyes stare out from behind paper prisons.
