Fallen Angel
ANALYSIS : Alexandre Cabanel was inspired by Milton's "Paradise Lost" to paint this fall of the angel who rebelled against God. For the poet, it is Lucifer (the bearer of light) assimilated to Satan. The angel is exiled to earth. He is seated on dark rocks where wind, like an announcement of his metamorphoses, sinuous and black plants which are drying up. He is painted as a god with a perfect body. He raises his head and looks at the land of his exile. His gaze is both tragic and dynamic. This look of defiance, the hair of flames, make it clear that the angel will not remain down for long. He is already preparing his revenge...
I don't understand why humans were so preoccupied with good and evil. It doesn’t make sense.
The Oreads
ANALYSIS : The Oreads are mountain and cave nymphs. In the catalog of the Salon of 1902 it’s written: «The shadows dissipate, radiant dawn appears and colors the tops of the mountains with a pink tint. Then flies up to the sky a long theory. It’s the merry troop of the Nymphs who, during the night, took their frolics in the shade of the great woods, at the edge of the river with calm waters. They leave the earth, and, under the eyes of astonished fauns, return to their homeland and the ethereal regions where the gods dwell.» With this flight of female bodies, Bouguereau dares a painting of unbridled imagination, without neglecting a certain poetic note.
For humans, seduction seemed to be very important, in view of all the works done on this subject.
The Storm
ANALYSIS : Caught in the middle of a sudden fall storm, a young couple rush to find shelter, temporarily shielding themselves from the storm, using the heroine's overskirt as an impromptu umbrella. The young man is shirtless and he is dressed in a sort of fur "loincloth" with a blue belt on his trunk that could be referred to as a hunting trunk. He holds the young girl by the waist. This young girl is wearing a long sheer white dress, and she has very white, milky skin and she is looking back worriedly. As if they were fleeing the storm. The young man's gaze seems bewitched by the carefree beauty of his partner, forgetting even what they are running for...
We haven't yet been able to explain why humans seem so bewitched by this feeling called «love».
This planet is full of works, each more remarkable than the next. We must continue the research.
