The Gender Pay Gap

Create For Society a Guerrilla campaign against " The Gender Pay Gap".
-Cody Foltan
ABOUT
Within this task I was challenged to create a guerrilla campaign which was against a South African Social and/or environmental justice cause and use this as my theme. The cause is the gender pay gap that is being unjustly put unto woman within the corporate world. Within this task I was required to have two outputs, one being an Illustrative typographic poster, which is purely type without any imagery, to communicate my message and the other being a visual output poster which consists of purely imagery and no text, to convey my message on the injustice of the gender pay gap being felt by woman.
RESEARCH
From research I have discovered that it was found within the inequality trends SA report, which was released in November 2020, that on average, woman earned 30% less than that of men, within the same work field. A quote by Ebrahimi states that “The pay gap is a particularly hot topic in the context of proposed amendments to the Companies Act, which contemplates bringing in mandatory disclosure of the pay gap, using the most extreme form of the pay gap [lowest paid employee within the organization against highest paid employee, or CEO].”

ABOUT
Here is my final concept for my typography poster, I have changed the background colour to white to bring more of a “modern” feel into the poster. I have also inserted the quotes stating, “Stop the spread, close the gap.” and “ Gender pay doesn’t require social distancing.” this message is a play off of the COVID-19 message and is very relevant in the year 2021 due to the pandemic and thus the viewers will understand the message. The meaning behind this first quote is that we need to close the gap within gender pay, the visual elements I have implemented is with the word “close” i have squeezed the letters together to show the literal closing that needs to happen and then with the word gap I have hollowed out the word and spaced it out slightly to again show the emptiness and gap between the pay. The second quote for the visual elements I have spaced out the word social distancing to further emphasize the gap within gender pay. the meaning behind this quote is that when woman get paid they should not get paid any less than that of men when doing the same work, and that is why I have put a lightly faded text in the background stating, “EQUAL WORK EQUAL PAY.”

ABOUT
Here is the final concept where I have changed the background colour, I put a gradient background fading from a blue (the men's side) down into the pink (the woman's side) the meaning behind this visual illustration is that we can see there is a bill that has been torn apart, this implies the gap that we can see within gender pay, on the one side of the bill I have inserted the men's gender icon and on the other side of the torn bill I inserted the woman's gender icon, the men's side is clearly seen as the $100 where as the woman's side is only a $1, this shows the injustice as it is the same bill but one side is of a higher value than that of the other side, this represents how woman are getting less money than men but doing the same work (that's what the one whole bill with different values represents). We then have a male business figure standing comfortably inside next to a massive stack of cash where as we see the woman is outside struggling desperately, clinging onto the $1 while her change is falling out of her pocket.
