The Archive of Zygmunt Rytka

A special place in our portfolio is occupied by online repository projects related to outstanding artists, important events, and the history of Polish visual culture. In 2019, at the invitation of the InSitu Foundation and the Foundation for Visual Arts, we were asked to create the Archive of the Work of Zygmunt Rytka, an intermedia artist and experimenter.

The collection of Zygmunt Rytka is amazing for two reasons. First of all, he was a very prolific artist who, besides, very consciously managed his output, and this, in turn, made the archive boast a really large part of the work created by the artist. Secondly, Zygmunt Rytka has been documenting the artistic life for many years, he has been with his camera at exhibitions and happenings by artists such as Andrzej Partum, Zbigniew Warpechowski, Jerzy Bereś, and Jożef Robakowski. He managed to capture in the frame the key events for understanding what art in Poland was in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

2019
Our project was to create a frame for the art of Zygmunt Rytka. We wanted to create a functional tool for viewing the artist's work presenting art in a completely modern, functional way. However, we aimed to use some subtle details inside the design to leave the scent of the 1980s. To achieve this, we used the Sigmund typeface (designed by Mateusz Machalski) referring to the typography of Polish road signs. Its characteristic features were to delicately transport us into the contemporary world of Zygmunt Rytka, while not imitating the style of the past, be a link between then and now.
