Service design for the circular economy

Mechelen, a city in Belgium, has the ambition to become a circular city. They decided to start an oyster mushroom nursery with the big amount of coffee grit they produce. This is  supported by several organisation such as Citamine vzw, Glimps vzw and others. With our project ‘mush rooms’ we want to support this intention and answer the following question: How can new services, experiences, and service touchpoints stimulate the circular economy in Mechelen and encourage actions and interactions?
Pre-service

There is a collaboration between horeca in Mechelen and mush rooms. This is visualized by window stickers. The collaborating restaurants, coffee bars and pubs offer their used coffee grit to us this in exchange for fresh produced oyster mushrooms: a win-win, circular situation!
Service

You can experience the story of mush rooms in ‘De Kwekerij’ ,where our production place is located. There you can get a glimpse of the plantation and book the rooms for meetings, tastings, workshops and lectures.
After service

We close the mush rooms -story by offering a culinary experience with our golden ticket. With this voucher you can get a free dish or drink in one of the restaurants or bars that is collaborating with us. This way you are directed back and connected to the horeca where our circular story started.
