According to the beliefs of the Dayak Iban legend, Nabau was an ancient god with extraordinary size and strength, supposedly able to give good luck to those who had seen Nabau with his own eyes. Nabau scales are also used by the Iban as a talisman in battle to provide additional strength.
The Iban people also believe that Nabau is the reincarnation of Tumenggung Koh (the title of regional head / customary leader) after his death. A Tumenggung usually has an area that includes a watershed, so it is not wrong if Nabau sightings are often found around large rivers.

Subject 553 is an entity that is passive, not easily provoked, and chooses to stay away from conflict because its existence is highly respected by the whole forest. Its body consists of skin and scales as hard as concrete, with several vines and moss growing on its body that works as camouflage which indirectly also protects it massive body from the outside world. On January 31, 2009, Nabau was accidentally exposed to the mass media due to his appearance in the Ulu Rajang flood area. In order to cover up the whereabouts of the actual subject 553, a lot of fake news was given to the mass media that the sightings were photo manipulations, the speedboat of the SAR team, and tree trunks that were washed away in the flood.

However, so far the most popular theory is given by the public with a scientific approach, which concludes that Nabau is still related to the ancient snake species Titanoboa.
