William Starkey's profile

Preparing a Life Cycle Assessment Report

The former CEO of Starkey Construction, William Starkey spent 37 years building high-end homes, hospitals, schools, and churches around Montgomery, Texas. As the leader of the company, William “Bill” Starkey was responsible for several tasks such as performing structure design efficiency and life cycle assessments (LCAs).

Creating an LCA is challenging for beginners since it involves thinking about every stage of the construction lifecycle. It begins with defining the scope and goal of the project so that the LCA is consistently performed. The scope and goal describe important choices about the project and provide answers about the level of details and system boundaries associated with the project.

Once those are defined, it is time for inventory analysis. In this step, preparers examine the energy usage and environmental releases for each stage of the project. This includes pollutant emissions and waste streams. Having the inventory analysis done gives workers a clear picture of how their project affects the environment.

Next, there is the impact assessment that lays out how certain decisions affect a business. This builds upon the previous step by determining exactly how the environment and the community are affected by the project's environmental effects. In doing so, preparers grant businesses a chance to improve processes and other things identified in the inventory analysis stage.

In the interpretation phase, LCA preparers must take all the results they gathered in the inventory analysis and impact assessment and draw conclusions regarding compliance and other factors. These results are used by others when making recommendations to a company regarding a project.
