The American Psychological Association (APA) is a leading professional and scientific organization that promotes the advancement and application of psychological science and knowledge for the purpose of improving lives and benefiting society. In a recent APA-published study on the impact of racism on the physical and mental well-being of Black people, Black women and girls facing racism responded positively and exhibited better mental health than Black men and boys.

According to Frederick Gibbons, the lead researcher at the University of Connecticut, there is hope that despite the prevalence of racism, some people are finding healthy ways to cope with the continuous challenge. Compared to Black men and boys, Black women exercised more and had better eating habits, which indicated to the researchers they were optimistic about the future. The findings were based on a Family and Community Health Study that sampled 889 families residing in Georgia and Iowa.

The first analysis examined the relationship between racial discrimination and the body mass index (BMI) of participants, while the second analysis examined how participants responded to survey questions regarding optimism, exercise, and eating habits. According to Gibbons, the findings indicated that adaptive coping strategies may promote resiliency, which is in contrast to less optimistic individuals.
