Its recent news telecast is about a Swedish woman who has joined IS the so-called Islamic State in Syria. She has been sentenced to three years of imprisonment for taking her son along with her. This has happened for the first time in the history of Sweden that an IS woman is convicted.

This woman is 31 years old and came to Syria via Turkey in 2014. She was convicted of putting her then 2 years old son’s life at risk for “arbitrary conduct with a child” by the court in a ruling by AFP. She was then arrested in 2018 by Kurdish forces which were followed by extensive detentions in a prison. Post which she managed to escape to Turkey in the year 2020. For which in November she was expelled to Sweden, with this on, and two other children born out of her nuptials with an IS fighter.

The court of Lund, Southern town lined that she should have been aware of her travel to a war zone which is controlled by Jihadist declared a caliphate in the terrorist organizations if captured in Iraq or Syria. On being separated from the father of her son, the petitioner had the permission to take her son along falsely mentioning that they are on a vacation to Turkey.

The latest trending headlines in Nigeria also mention that “She told the court that she was in Syria only for few days but the court knew her intention to stay there. She further plans to appeal the court of the verdict, stated by her lawyer to Swedish news channel TT. As per Sweden’s Intelligence Service Sapo, around 300 Swedish residents or Swedes, out of which ¼ are women have joined IS in Iraq and Syria in the year 2013–14. Around 150 of them have returned, Swedish Defense University told AFP.

War crimes and murder can be investigated in detail but convicts like these are hard to obtain. In the year 2015, December- Two Swedes were sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Gothenburg, the conviction was proved basis videos showing them actively participating in decapitations. According to local media, a few more returning IS fighters have been convicted for misdemeanors and crimes. 75% of people who joined jihadist are of Swedish Nationality and around 24 % were just born in Sweden, as per Randstorp.
