"The Vanishing Half" Alternate Cover

This book cover was designed using Adobe Illustrator. The primary tools used for this project were the gradient tool and the reflection transform tool. Fonts used for this project were "Cheddar Jack" and "Std Wb." I chose to use the skin tone swatch in combination with the gradient tool to create most of the text in addition to the basic graphic texture "sticks." Colors used from the skin tone swatch are: #B19177, #D1B79F, #C0A58D, #8C715D, #72594B, and #543E36. Without spoilers, this novel by Brit Bennett is a story about two African American twin sisters and explores the concept of identity. One twin sister is left with her original identity while the other sister, passing as white escapes her past and former identity entirely. I chose to use the skin tone hues to represent the extent to which this novel explores racial identity, with one half of the book title noticeably lighter than the other. Using the gradient tool, the text slowly fades off the page, bringing the word "vanishing" to reality through the text. Additionally, the halves of the title are mirrored representing the twin relationship presented in this novel and how though different, some aspect of these sisters will always be identical.
