The Child - Monochromatic Illustration

Monochromatic Illustration

Monochromatic illustrations can be difficult to understand as you are stuck using one color in varying tones and hues. However, when doing a portrait is fascinating to be able to simply the complex shapes and contours of the face into a simplified version. The tricky part then, is attempting to still add as much detail as there is needed to recognize the subject.
When deciding on a subject, it was easy to choose Grogu from the Mandalorian because he is already a green subject that would be easy to play with the colors. Overall, the biggest challenge was trying to get the details of the cloak figured and deciding what values to give them. The colors were adjusted multiple times as I created the composition using global colors to change them quickly as necessary. Finally, after illustrating the Child, I needed t o decide on what would fill the background besides a gradient. That being said, it seemed fitting to add in the Mandalorian to the background as he is such an important part of the story line. Part of the purpose of this project is to create an illustration that is visually interesting and makes sense. To those who know the show, this is an important connection that needed to be made.

Below you can see the final illustration and the final sketch that the illustration was based off of.
