Jutland Desk
Jutland formed out of my need for a better way of working. I was stationed at the dinner table each day, setting up in the morning, making space for breakfast, and clearing my things for dinner. I could not get past the constant upheaval and the stacks of work around me. Moving constantly, the large surface, and my tendency to hunch ate away at my ability to focus. My simple solution is Jutland. The desk gives me a dedicated spot for working, and standing is essential for health, focus, and sketching from the shoulder. A small footprint allows the desk to fit in my home and by nature keeps me from juggling too many things at once. A lower shelf serves as a foot rest at times, a mental queue at others, and occasionally holds a pot of tea between cups. My aesthetic and construction decisions were inspired by two people: my Dad and my Grandpa. From my Dad I learned that there is usually a way to solve your problem with what you have available. This spurred me to design Jutland within the limits of the wood I had in my shop and the tools I already owned, which I imagine many people also own. From my Grandpa I learned about the Danish woodworking that runs in my family and explains my penchant for the works of Danish icons like Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl, Grethe Meyer, Børge Mogensen, and Poul Henningsen, among others. Their restraint in design and respect for materials are themes I heard in my Grandpa’s stories of barn raising and home building. I’ve named this piece with this history in mind, after the region that my Danish heritage comes from: Jutland.

As a designer I create things to help others. My goal is that these plans would give you a starting point as you step into woodworking and making. I hope they inspire you to start on your next project, whether that be a desk or something completely different. Take it at your own pace, have fun, and make adjustments where you see fit. If you take the time to make this desk please reach out and let me know! I would be thrilled to see what you make and how you have customized your desk. You can email me at jeremiahbeatham@gmail.com, or reach out on Instagram @b.thumbdesign to show me what you’ve built, what you have done to make Jutland your own, or what other projects you have been inspired to start. Take care, and happy making.
