I, Afousis the Demented

I, Afousis the demented

Afousis, old, despised, weakened and seriously ill, when he realized his end, leaned into an abandoned ruin. His absence was noticed by the people of the village, who had been looking for him for days. Some children found him and took him to the cafe of Costas M. Diakou. Then everyone ran to support him in his last moments. At some point in his delirium, because Afousis had fever, he began to sing sweetly "yaeli", saying: "Today I'm still here, tomorrow I will die… And they will take me to Christ as a captain…" Indeed, the next day Afousis died. It is said that never a dead man gathered such a large entourage. The people of Kassos not only loved Afousis, the demented of the village, but in order to remember him, they saved some verses from the melody that Afousis often sung in his loneliness.
