Adobe Mythical Birds

THE CONCEPT:

There is a fascination that exists across different cultures involving mythological birds. During my research, I realized there are layers of interconnectivity between these mythical creatures. The similarities are astounding. Almost every major culture across the globe has a form of a Phoenix (or giant bird) in their story-telling. Are they all alluding to the same creature through different perspectives? One bird, many feathers? This common link between diverse cultures lead me to explore my interpretation of these birds.
This project was commissioned by Adobe through the Creative Residency Fund to create an original artwork using Illustrator for iPad. Adobe launched Illustrator for iPad in 2020 and wanted to drive awareness/anticipation for the release by showcasing unique compelling artwork. The goal was to capture the imagination of designers and non-designers alike by showcasing all the boundless possibilities with Illustrator for iPad.

THE PROCESS:

After determining the initial concept, the first step was to sketch, sketch, sketch. It's about letting your mind flow freely to explore forms, negative spaces and potential compositions without getting too detailed.

Colour Exploration:

Experimenting with different colour profiles to find the right match for the artwork. The final palette was derived from the earthy tones and vibrant red paints and textures of the ancient/old cave paintings and manuscripts.
