I have had a part time job in the shop Cult Vintage since 2015. I work weekends and one afternoon a week at the shop. The shop sells both male and female vintage clothing although the shop is laid out in a unisex style.
The clothes we sell are from the 1950s to 2000s and a variety of different styles and fashions. Clothes come from Europe, UK, America and Japan.
We get weekly deliveries which we weigh, process, sort, steam, size each item by hand, label them up and price and value the items. The items are coded for stock control and so they can be listed online and in the shop. We also hand size all vintage clothes that customers know what their modern sizes are.
We sell to customers in the shop and online. The main business is from Depop, before Cult Vintage got a bigger shop they were one of the top 10 sellers worldwide on depop.
Working at Cult Vintage has taught me to understand the seasons and to identify up and coming trends. Recently I mentioned that I had seen lots of tik tok users buying and styling up sweater vests so we bought in 200 of them and we only have a handful left. I was able to identify an up and coming trend and we got the stock in the shop. I now follow the tik tok trends for ideas.
I am now able to identify clothes from different eras and have a good product knowledge for clothing brands and labels. I love going through the boxes to see what is in the deliveries and the interesting clothing that comes in to the shop.
I also get to see a wide variety of customers, the shop mainly has students in at the afternoons and weekends. But during the days we can get customers of all ages and I can help the find items and help them style their items.
I love seeing students round college wearing the clothes from the shop or how they style the items they have bought from the shop.
As part of my job I am allowed to help merchandise the shop floor, our current best sellers are spell out sweatshirts so we have those by the front door so customers can see them as soon as they walk in. I also styled the windows for our new shop opening going for a mix of streetwear, Burberry and pastel colours across the 6 mannequins.
We also sell rare clothes on ebay this can be things like vintage kimonos from Japan with amazing silk screen prints, rare band tshirts from the 60s and aviator jackets from the 50s. When listing on ebay we have to research the rare items through online research and past auctions, we have had some amazing pieces of clothing come through the doors.
We also recycle any vintage clothes that is damaged or stained by giving them to the local charity shops so they can get them weighed for rag.
Everything cult vintage does is about sustainable fashion and educating people on vintage fashion. I am still employed at Cult Vintage now.
