Metamorphosis, a project implemented by Shtatëmbëdhjetë, aims to bring arts and culture into the dialogue in order to discuss the importance of utilizing public space. By reviving and revitalizing abandoned buildings even if for a single day, the goal is to document the collective memory of a past that is rarely talked about, and to address the utilization of public space for the benefit of the community. Metamorphosis focuses specifically on buildings, monuments and public spaces that are a product of various social processes. For this reason, the research and documenting of the make-up of building materials does not suffice; their function, which has changed alongside society, must also be scrutinized. Furthermore, the way that the corpus of public knowledge is formed is also changing, as are the public spaces in which these buildings and cultural monuments exist. Metamorphosis endeavors to analyze the connection between buildings, monuments and public awareness, both to better understand the logic of how the corpus of public knowledge is formed and organized in public spaces, and further crystalize the active role that buildings and monuments have in society. In this way, by engaging with the histories and spatial symbols of memory, Metamorphosis emphasizes the power that collective memory has in shaping new urban spaces, all the while insisting on people’s right to the city.
