INCLUSIVE DESIGN - PROJECT SHUT
The methodology I used in this project is Inclusive Design as guidance for the design process. Over the years, design for disability and impairment have been populated with many different terms such as Accessible Design, Lifespan Design, Universal Design, Inclusive Design, etc. These terminologies are related to design for limitation, but they have slightly different interpretations depending on the context.
Inclusive Design was defined by Weller and Clarkson as "the design of mainstream products and/ or services that are accessible and usable by people with the widest range of abilities within the widest range of situations without the need for special adaptation for specialized design". In simpler terms, the methodology assists to make the designs to be used by everyone in any situation without added features. By default, Inclusive Design takes the human as the heart of the design process; it gives more diversity, flexibility, and convenience for the users. The project will refer to the 2010 "Americans with Disabilities Acts Standards for Accessible Design" and the book "Inclusive Design: A Universal Need" by Linda Nussbaumer (2012) as references for design criteria and principles.
