“丑牛不丑” is a project that I created for the WeChat Chanel TYPOREOGRAPHY to celebrate the year of the OX.
The inspiration comes from a couple of the most impressive bull characters that could be taken as the image of the year from my point of view.
The first character that hit me was "牛魔王“ the bull demon king. The bull demon king is one of the most mythic figures from the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West". I was deeply attracted by this character as a child. If my memory serves my right, he was the very first character that was shown on the main-stream media that related to body piercing. The style which "牛魔王" has was mind-blowing and cutting edge which makes me deeply impressed.
Another character for me that could represent the year was the Wall Street Bull. I still remember how I found the most popular evergreen landmark years ago when I visited the big apple and walked around the Wall Street. Perhaps to get to the bull you don't ever need to follow your google map, all you need is to follow the noise, since the Charging Bull is always surrounded by tourists from all over the world. I found it was very interesting that people tend to take selfies with the bull from the front view, they enjoy to touch and take the pictures from the back view as well, especially with the balls. The bronze sculpture shows a shiny glossy golden color after years of getting touched and polished by it's admirers. So do those balls.
