Silver Lining is a new collection to commemorate Bastard’s 20th anniversary in 2014. As the Bastard team claim to design for themselves, we decided to shift focus but continue to target them, today, 20 years later. We started by thinking of the main reasons people skate and we synonymously said: to relax. Our proposed product range aims to do just that, help people relax and de-stress.
The past 20 years, the world has seen a lot of violence and plenty of disasters that have affected millions of people, thus we came up with Silver Lining; a metaphor for optimism. Life is about choices, you can choose to bring peace or hate to any situation. With the help of our de-stressing products the users should subconsciously choose peace over hate.
Graphics have an ironic twist to them. They represent life, death and more importantly peace. They will be printed onto our collection pieces using screen/silk printing as we were drawn to this method’s ability to print light colours so solidly onto dark backgrounds and its capability of printing onto textured and rough surfaces.
All the materials are either reused and defects of already issued Bastard products. Mainly use the cargo pant fabric, especially the ones with the triangular pattern printed onto them. We we’ll also be using other sustainable materials like wood, metal and rope.
Having so much excess fabric from their cargo pants, Bastard already began upholstering their own furniture with their recycled fabric. Using old, recycled cargo pants (by offering users a 20%-30% discount) links back to the graphics of giving a new life to these otherwise dead products. This is fabric is from their most popular product and what better way to celebrate their 20th anniversary than by paying homage to their first product that so many people still own, buy and wear.
The products range from small to large and so vary in price as well targeting a large section of the market. The link that ties these products together is the fact that they all aid in de-stressing in one form or another.

The future of Silver Lining is the continuation of the concept and product range by adapting the graphics each season by inviting artists and designers to collaborate. These graphics can also easy be transferable onto existing Bastard products such as T-shirts, snowboards, skateboards, jackets and beanbags. Expansion will also allow the Bastard team to target a new target market and this can help with brand growth.
