A Christmas Carol Commercial
CONCEPT, SCRIPT & DIRECTING
A Christmas Carol has been a staple at the Denver Center for decades, and the marketing for it was about as old as the show itself. I really wanted to add a snarkiness to our commercials, since Scrooge is a notably mean character, but I continued to get pushback from our artistic team who were resistant to anything outside of the “family-friendly, feel-good” realm. Ultimately, this commercial was the compromise, allowing me to wink at the grumpiness of Scrooge while still driving home the show's positivity, too.
CONCEPT WRITEUP
With our new Scrooge coming to stage this year, we can try a fun way to unveil the actor and introduce him to our audience. Using shots of just his gloved hands, the voiceover will talk about the man who brings Christmas cheer to all. They’ll mark off a calendar leading up to the 25th, put presents on a sleigh, show off a big feast and even eat some milk and cookies. The assumption will be that we’re talking about Santa, but surprise! The last shot is finally of Scrooge, dubiously asking if you expected someone else.
