WE NYC Increases Opportunities for Women-Owned Startups

A Broadway enthusiast and avid traveler Samantha Levine resides in Brooklyn. After decades of working with the Department of Education, Samantha Levine became an entrepreneur in New York. The city supports women-led start-ups through initiatives such as the Women Entrepreneurs NYC (WE NYC).

WE NYC was established by the city to reduce gender disparities in entrepreneurship. In 2015, the initiative commissioned a report on the state of local women entrepreneurs. According to the findings, men own more businesses and have higher revenues on average than women. However, the number of women-owned businesses increased considerably between 2002 and 2014 and experienced faster growth on average than male-led companies.

To reduce the revenue gap and support women business owners, WE NYC advocates for increasing access to loans and funding, creating mentorship programs, and offering leadership training programs. The results of the study informed the development of the WE Fund, a state-funded investment vehicle, and the WE Connect mentoring and networking program.
