The Background
The motivation for an affordable and sustainable student housing solution stems from a combination of an unmet need and a pursuit for innovation.
The need for student housing in South Africa is one that has not been effectively met, as each year there is an ever-increasing demand for accommodation. Not only does this problem add to the already serious housing backlog in the country, but it is also a prevalent issue affecting other countries on the continent. Unavailability of land, lack of quality, slow funding response, increasing subsidies and inaccessibility of the housing market for low-income earners, are some of the primary factors that pose a challenge to eradicating South Africa's housing backlog.

The infographics below help illustrate the aforementioned challenge:
The Site
The site of the proposed development is located in Hatfield, within the the jurisdictional area of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality.
The site is surrounded by Stanza Bopape Street (at the northern side), Pretorius Street (at the southern side) - the main in-feed from the N1/N4 - and Hilda Street (at the western side) - the road that passes through the Hatfield CBD and leads directly to the University of Pretoria.
This location is conducive as it is a walking distance from the university, as well as several other tertiary institutions in the area. The site is close to the Hatfield CBD, which makes most of the facilities and amenities within reach; and a well-endowed commuter transport network around the site makes movement very easy.
