ScourgeBringer : The Relinquishing of Rèl

A short comic written by Pia Jacqmart, accompanying the release of the ScourgeBringer Supporter pack by Flying Oak Games.

The idea was to create a story set in the universe of the game ScourgeBringer, but not centered on the main character. The first screen of the game shows a skeleton lying against a wall, and Pia and I decided to tell the story of this anonymous corpse.

So, while Pia was writing the script, I started working on the character design of our protagonist. She's from the same post-apocalyptic universe as Khyra, the game hero, but from a different era. We had a vague character arc for her : she starts as a strong, angry, powerful fighter, so I made her muscular, her face and arms and hands marked by scars. I gave her a military look, with boots and a top that emphases on her shoulders.

Once the script was written I had to translate it into comic book format - so! it's storyboard time! Rèl is a quasi-silent character, she's been fighting for a long time and she's the only human being around : there's no need for her to talk. So the comic book had to communicate action & feelings through visuals alone. 12 pages, and a dense script.

Once the storyboard was validated, I started working on the final pages. There's not much to say about this part. I took the colors directly from screenshots of the game, to keep the same mood and setting.

COVER DESIGN//

The story is set in a giant weird monolith called the ScourgeBringer. The monolith is vertical in shape, but the comic is horizontal so that the digital version be easy to read on computer/tablet screen. I went for a vertical cover illustration anyway, taking the entire front and back cover. Linking the shape of the monolith to the horizontality of the comic book, and creating an unsettling mood to pair with the story and the fact that we're litteraly following the story of the first corpse we meet in the game.
