Have Camp, Will Fire


Experimenting with fire + smoke simulations, with a particle system for the embers. Part of a larger personal project. 


Clay + Shadow pass. A combination of self-modelled, paid and free models were used. The rocks, embers, wood and background were sculpted in Blender using texture brushes to add small details, then overlaid with hair particle systems to generate complexity.  


Lighting Pass. A combination of a point light, HDRI and emission materials were utilised. 


Emission pass + ember particle system preview.


Turbulence and wind forcefields gave the embers some randomness, while still allowing for depth-of-field within the camera.


Primary composition pass without simulation. 


Primary composition pass + low res fire+smoke simulation preview. In the end, while the flames provided good body and structure, elements of real fire were composited on top for extra realism, especially with the finer details of the smaller tongues of flame.
