Magazine Elements 2013

A Magazine Cover and Double Page Spread. I did hard copy version as well as an Ipad version, since it’s becoming increasingly more popular to read magazines on tablets.
I chose to do a dance themed magazine for this project and after profuse brainstorming decided to name it ‘For The Dancer’. When I think of dance, the first thing that comes to my mind is leaps and jumps, so I based my cover image on this. I did a photo shoot with my model where she did various dance jumps on a trampoline and I was shooting from low on the ground to create a feeling of height. I wanted nothing but sky in the background to also give the illusion that she was up really high. The final image was chosen because it is centred and the model’s hair is flying back creating movement and a feeling of flying. After researching existing dance magazine covers I established a clean masthead that is easy to read to read. I incorporated the red colour of the figure’s top into the masthead just to tie them together. As other magazine often do, I had one subheading that was more prominent than the others by making it larger and in the same colour red as I used on the masthead.
For my double page spread, I continued the use of the red colour in the background to connect the designs. This colour would be a consistent colour throughout the whole magazine. As well as the colour I also continued the idea of jumps and leaps by using silhouettes in the positions. I wanted the article to be fun and easy to read and to do achieve this I included quirky shapes for the columns of text in my design. The silhouettes nicely border these shapes and they create an easy dynamic throughout the spread. I also made subtitles to break up the article and make it easier to read, these are made obvious the larger font and red colour.
