THE INVISIBLE WOMEN

Puducherry, the French colonial settlement till 1954 and one of the most beautiful union territory of India, is the amalgamation of the traditional Indian sensibilities and the French architecture. The White Town, the bougainvillea laided walls of the colonial structures and the many beaches that embrace the place lure people from different places to have their lives bash here. The frequent number of visitors to Pondy along with the residents, contribute a lot to the litter in the town. But ones the city goes to sleep, there emerges the strong and determined workforce of women. They sweep, clean and load their carts with the dirt and waste the town heaved all day. They are not employees of the Puducherry Municipality, but contract workers. Life of these workers starts around 9.30 PM every night near Kamban Kalai Arangam. From there, they go to different parts of the town and work till 4 in the morning. Undergoing their choreographed routine, with no security for life, they work from dusk to dawn to keep the town hygiene as possible. With only the bad quality reflective orange jackets, they brave many skin allergies and diseases.

They face high risk of contracting various communicable diseases due to handling of waste most of the time with bare hands and bootless feet. Lack of boots, masks and gloves add up to the absence of any precautionary vaccinations. Paid only Rs. 250 per day for this enormous physically challenging work, this is very low compared to the hazardous job they do. The saddest part is, these women, having done this tiresome work for the whole night do not get enough time for rest. Back in their homes they have to do the daily chores, the household works assigned to their role as a woman. At the brake of dawn these women become invisible to the once again busy town, working hard ceaselessly throughout their life.
