A project I set myself just for fun. With limited resources, I decided to set myself a challenge to complete in summer 2012 before packing off to uni! I enjoy making clocks because they are both decorative and functional. This design started with just an idea, and from that idea I made the process up as I went. Using scraps of various soft and hardwoods, I created a clock face that brings life back to old materials. I wanted the outcome to be quirky, imperfect and random. But at the same time it is completely functional, as the 12 points of the clock are indicated by 12 corners of the wooden offcuts.

I used a stencil to ensure that all 12 points were in exactly the right place. Once all the pieces were bonded together, I sanded the front face flat while leaving the back rough and uneven, highlighting the recycled nature of the product. A thin coat of varnish applied to the front brought out the vibrant grain of the various woods, including pine, oak, teak and more.

I had a lot of fun making this. It took many hours to get it looking exactly how I wanted, but I guess it costs time to make time! The finished product now takes pride of place on my living room wall at home in Bristol
