Pedro Agbonifo-Obaseki’s Idia: The Epic of an African Queen which is told in mime, dance and brilliant dialogue appropriates the diverse dramatic performance techniques of Benin. However, saliently and subtly embedded in this play is the story of Imaguero, wife of Oliha – a story of love and hate, bravery and cowardice, cunning and foolhardy, intrigues and more intrigues!
This epic story of an African Queen is a collage of tradition and modernity.
The play is an appreciation of the historical Idia and her deep-seated contribution to Benin. Hear her: “Edo! I cast my dice in the court of Fate. Benin will remember that Idia was here.”
