“Custom Homes for Birds of Every Feather” was the concept created for the design of a paper sample promotional booklet for French Paper. In order to illustrate how specific inks, finishes and line-weights could print on French Paper, a humorous approach was taken in the form of a series of stories about birds in search of new luxurious homes.
The idea of ‘customization’ was chosen in order to reflect the custom options available such as page sizes, colours, additives, etc. This equally related to the several birds highlighted in the booklet, all of whom had specific needs with regards to the size, location and style of their homes. To further highlight the luxuriousness of the custom papers, 18th century public domain paintings were the jumping off point for the landscapes and characters created. Birds were dressed in regal clothing and were personified by giving them names, occupations, and employers. A variety of typefaces and embellishments were used in order to reflect the high-class birds, homes and paper that the stories were printed on.
