Inspired by the maze with tall concrete walls, unpredictable pathing, and miscellaneous hanging plants, a boutique retreat is designed to shape one of the most popular historical provinces—Siem Reap. Located not so far from Angkor Wat temple, this tropical hotel sits on the corner of low population density streets, alongside with calm atmosphere and soothing wind of the nearby river.

Three primary programs of this project consist of a reception, a restaurant & lounge and a hotel. To achieve an unconventional circulation experience, we isolate the three stations, later joined by distinct pathing methods. In between reaching each destination, users will come across material and floor level separation, semicircular walls with various heights, and a massive curve concrete staircase which is a central core of the design. Upon entry, people will be visually attracted by the arc walls with indication signs carved onto the stone or wood surfaces as directional guides and decorative elements. Wall hanging leaves, large trees, and other types of tropical plants help block direct sunlight and reduce excessive heat during the day. We also introduce a humble and locally sourced material palette to the design including raw concrete finish, sandstone texture, natural wood, rattan, and stacked stone.
