Hubris and Némesis

"Hubris and Némesis"
This illustration was created for "Inchiostro", the magazine of the University of Pavia.

My work is based on the concept of hubris in ancient Greece, i.e. the pride derived from one’s own power or luck. It appears as the attitude of overestimation, and is punished by the gods directly or through the condemnation of earthly institutions. The importance of this concept in ancient Greek culture has its many evidences also in literature, poets like Hesiod and Aeschylus used the word "hubris" to describe this kind of transgression, and the myths of Icarus, Phaeton or Sisyphus are some examples of the punishment.
