The first chronic pain management ecosystem in a physical device

Eden offers a garden of pain relief solutions, to assist sufferers with their pain management in the comfort of their own home. Introducing suffers to relief methods in a financially viable way, before learning what works best for them and what they want to invest in.

University Minor project
September - December 2020
Chronic pain negatively impact sufferers quality of life. Limiting movement, cause anxiety, and depression which in turn makes the pain worse. It has numerous long-term physical, psychological, social, and economic consequences. People suffering from chronic pain are often at risk for developing further complications, including altered mental states and physical dysfunctions.

Around 28 million of the UK population suffer from chronic pain. Who continue to need relief, thus ensuring there is room for another solution on the market.
Personalisation
Effective chronic pain relief is a recipe of different solutions that work for the individual. Eden holds a set of interchangeable units that the user gets to choose and change whenever. Some units promote relaxation and act as a reminder to use solutions so the user doesn’t forget and is left feeling worse or frustrated later.
Process
Listing key pain points allowed me to understand the needs of the user and what the outcome needed to do in order to be seen as a valuable solution that people would invest in. Pain points where turned into 'How Might We' statements for a fragment generation session, before building, and further developing concepts (Encouraging use, Relieving stress and Personalisation).
Design language
Relief achieving - Simple organic forms are approachable and calming. Paring with sanitary colours will create a respectful and professional feel.

Intelligent & Personal - A refined and tactile interface must come across personal and intelligent. Using considered dynamic forms will create an understanding body.

Homely & Integrated - Soft minimal forms feel placed, unobtrusively nestling as if it was always there. Concealed and integrated using matt plastics and worm colours.
Manufacture
Manufacturing of the product was considered; design for injection moulding, assembly, component chosen, and the use of appropriate materials. Being estimated to cost around £40 before mark up.
The design
The tray allows solutions to sit in the home environment and be seen as a source of relief, building a sense of freedom again for sufferers. Eden is designed to evoke a calming response and build trust between the device and the user, by carefully considering the look, feel and wider touch-points of the product.

The system uses habit formation, goal reinforcement and social motivation to create value by empowering sufferers to ensure solutions are used affectively. Eden positions itself as a consumer-health product by enabling access to pain relief products already on the market. By acting as a guardian of relief it is able to delight and empower users by evoking a new management over their pain.
