Exploring Process: Casting

Like many my art school projects, my objective was not to produce a beautiful aesthetically pleasing final outcome. I placed less value on the end result, because my focus was on the journey that led to the final outcome. I wanted to learn, understand material and make myself competent in using processes.

This project was focused on casting, a way of working I had had little experience with before. I experimented with rubber, resin, ceramic, paper, wax, plaster and matal casting processes. I chose to produce simple, clean shapes. I did not want the focus to be on the intricacy of each cast, but more the quality.

The image below shows the final presentation of this project. By placing all components involved in the casting process in a glass display cabinet, I wanted to emphasize the beauty of the process involved, drawing attention away from the final outcome. I was documenting success and failure, placing equal importance in the unsucessful casts as the succesful ones. In some ways I think I learnt more from my mistakes than my successes; By identifying what went wrong, I was able to ensure that these mistakes were not repeated
