Enamel: Playing with Glass

A short project based on my first experiences with Enamel. I produced a series of bowls and other vessels using traditional hand tools, with little planning and control over the final outcome. My process was quick and organic, I used what I had learnt from each experiment to inspire ideas for my next one.

All pieces are made from sheet copper, hammered and bent in different ways to create unique forms. These forms where then coated in various liquid and powder enamels, mixed and applied in various ways to create different textures, heated in small kilns for various lengths of time in order to create different surface appearances. I remain fascinated by the fact that all of these different colours and effects can be created using nothing more than glass and copper.

Every variable plays a critical role in the final outcome: method of application, quantity, colour, kiln temperature, length of time in the kiln, minerals and the way these minerals reacted with eachother. I hope to have the opportunity to work with enamel again in the future, as I feel as though I have only just scratched the surface of what this fascinating material is capable of
