Beyond the wall. Winery at La Portera

Redevelopment of La Union winery at La Portera (Valencia)
/// Master thesis project

Conversion of an existing winery from a small cooperative producing few low-quality wines into the productive and cultural core of the small village
The rural fabric of La Portera results from the juxtaposition of variations of the same building typology: the corral with the farmer house of one side. The village develops along a longitudinal spine made of two parallel streets, while a sequence of transversal streets that follows the rhythm of the 'corrales' breaks the fabric and connect the village to the vineyard
The project resumes and develops even further this rhythm. The transversal wall of the corral becomes the generative element of the complex.

The wall represents the main structural element defining spaces and relations between different part of the building as well as with the context
Passing through every wall the visitors can simultaneously catch isolated moments of the winemaking process as well as of the vineyard, the natural element at its origin. At the end of the path, the collection of all the fixed memories of the place and the landscape will shape as a vibrant and dynamic experience in the eye of the visitor.
The functional program includes a larger winery, designed for the production of high-quality products, that directly connects to the landscape. The leisure and learning centers together with a sequence of public spaces connect the landscape and the production activity to the rural settlement
